welcome to the forum too by the way ;D
the cost of your reek could start 5 grand an be as high as 30 plus grand depending on it's condition... :)

Thanks Cruetoone,

Original Colour was yellow; in 1994 with the rebuild it was sprayed in Two Pack, and then in 1999 again where it has been garaged and driven to my dad's archery club once every couple of months

Hi List,

I am planning a Eureka build/restoration at the moment & considering what to pay for a car, whether in good condition or bad.

I am struggling a little bit to understand the sorts of values put on Eurekas on this list and in the classifieds?

I should firstly say that above all else I do not wish to cause offense. I am aware that this topic could cause ruffle some feathers. I have found this list to be a great resource & everyone on it to be very friendly and helpful, so please don't take this the wrong way.

The above car does look to be a good one, however I can't understand how $25,000 is a reasonable value?

Again, please don't take offense Cruetoone ( or anyone else ) as the sort of value you are stating does seem to fall in line with the other cars I have seen advertised.

I'm just trying to understand this for myself, so would be keen to hear your thoughts. If I am way off then am more than happy to be corrected.

To illustrate where I am coming from, here are a few 2nd hand performance/sports cars from carpoint, all below $15,000....

hey tom

i am not easily offended so don't worry about me i've got a Bon Jovi icon as my signature face for this forum an road runner as my sample photo's for instuctions on how to instruct guys an gals on how to post pictures here on the forum...

in all honesty you have a vast collection of prestigious cars as your guide an too compare them to a eureka differs from mine because i could compare them to muscle cars an that would not be coreect either.

in saying that a eureka has it's own pricelist somewhere on the web i'll post a link sometime soon an i think i saw it in a car magazine justcars or unique car just to name a couple ....
but at the end of the day a eureka is worth to a person who is selling it for the amount of time they put into it custom parts wheels interior engine...

would you believe me when i say a turn key drive away eureka straight off the factory floor would sell for 35 grand as one person claimed in a magazine article i read..

here are some other mighty fine eureka's to glimpse over an if you get a chance to meet them guys ask them how much it will cost to part with a pride an joy to own an drive ...

Going from those photos, with the new loom and the ea81 Scooby donk, I'd say around the $8,000 to $10,000. It may be even around the $12,000 as there's only so much photos can tell you (other than it appears to be a F4 with a Colleen Long Rear Valance).

Prices above that (the $20,000 + range), are if you can find the right buyer. And finding those is harder than finding a 'reek for sale that's on road.

Tom,
I thought I might expand on your original questioning a bit.

Quote
I am struggling a little bit to understand the sorts of values put on Eurekas on this list and in the classifieds?

I should firstly say that above all else I do not wish to cause offense. I am aware that this topic could cause ruffle some feathers. I have found this list to be a great resource & everyone on it to be very friendly and helpful, so please don't take this the wrong way.

The above car does look to be a good one, however I can't understand how $25,000 is a reasonable value?

As you are aware, a reek is it's own shape: it's not a direct replica of any other car. So while you might be able to make an AC Cobra replica for around 50 G's and have it maintain or even increase it's value over the following years, a reek is in another category.

Unfortunately, a reek is closely related to a VW so public perception will always focus on this. VW freaks are a completely different type of freak compared to your average petrolhead, just as we reek freaks differ from everyone.

So intially the prices of resold reeks plummeted like any other car off the showroom floor. Throw in factors like their assembly by questionable backyard mechanics and the fact they appeal to the few rather than the many and the prices would stay low.

Fast forward 25 years or so and public perception has changed somewhat. No longer the knuckle dragging V8 mentality ruling the roost. The JDM import scene has proved a good shape with loads of fibreglass can be cool, and more importantly, accepted.

Throw a couple of high quality reeks out there and you'd get respect, rather than abuse. I watched it change first hand over a few years at the Summernats with my reek. Low and behold, the prices of reeks start going up. And look, in the big picture we're all happy to have our pride and joy increase in value. It does mean the days of cheap reeks and replacement panels are going (or gone) but we'd all rather have it this way.

Having said this, it's early days and reek prices are still low compared to some of the other cars you've listed. Two things: (a) you get what you pay for: if the guy has reciepts for 20 G's of work he's going to want most of his money back on a sale, and (b) just like any car in the upper price range, it's going to need to be one of the better examples to be asking that money. For a reek, anything over about 18 gorillas is gotta be good.

I hope this has helped out a bit!

     Simon

tom another thing to take into consideration is the numbers on each car that had been produced, there was only something like 683 or 687 ever built. these are simliar number to the phase 3 gtho that go for now 3/4 mill and more, not to say that our cars will ever be worth that but i think you get my drift in that our cars were never mass produced. its also a piece of australian history that your buying.

to get back on topic, ak0412 this car looks immac!!! i wish your dad luck in selling it, but at the same time i hope he doesnt sell it because he will be kicking himself when it goes.
dont sell it too cheap! from its looks i would not be selling it for anything under 10, but id be chasing closer to the 15 mark maybe even more.

Another question...

is there a way to get the car "club" registered?

it gets a little expensive to keep paying rego of $600 per year and new batteries just to drive 50-150kms a year

I've seen one pic of a Eureka with Club plates.

My dad had it up for sale in 2000, but only had little interest... it had a RWC back then and has travelled less than 1000km since. No oil leaks, still serviced, to me... Immaculate

But he never knew this site existed, until I came across it a few months ago... Thus he didn't know there was an interest still in the car

Thanks for your help

Hi Simon,

Thanks for your email. You have some interesting points that I agree with.

For the record I do know it is a unique car design. I have been aware of Eureka's since that unique cars ad in 1990, & also visited the factory in the same year.

BTW, just a bit of trivia... I have heard people comment that the car design is based on a Lamborghini Countach or Miura, & I Always thought the Ferrari 512BB was also an inspiration, but have a look at the Marcos Mantis XP... also a bit of an influence I think...

There are really two ways of looking at this I think... Is it a 'sellers market' or a 'buyers market'?

I get what you are saying about the guy who has sunk huge $$$ into his car & if he's going to sell it he's going to want it back, but that all depends on whether the buyer is trying to buy it off him, or if he is trying to sell it to a buyer.

Believe me I have sunk plenty of money into cars over the years & restored quite a few & you never get all of the money back. The 2nd unfortunate part about that is that the more a car does gain a following or a perceived value, the more the mechanics and parts vendors start charging mega $$$. I'm sure you have started/will start to see this more & more in the VW world.

Sorry to sound grim, & maybe I'm rambling a bit... I guess my concern is really the same as yours. I have a passion for these cars & want to see them survive. I like the idea of their values rising, & want to do the best job I can in building the best car I can.
I've been tallying up all of the likely jobs I will need to do, & I'm sure as you know, it gets expensive very quickly....

Anyhow, thanks for the replies to my question. It's all been very interesting.

Cheers,

Tom

I'm no expert, but I do have two Reeks in the garage, both are registered and both are on the road frequently (three of the four days this long weekend).  I don't anticipate offering either of them for sale in the near future, but if I did decide to part with one of them, I would be wanting well more than 12k for either of them and would lose no sleep in asking for more than that.  In fact, on this long weekend, I was asked 'What they were worth' and told an American Muscle Car owner and enthusiast that he would have to part with between 15 and 25k for one if he could find one for sale and he replied, 'Is that all, I would have thought they were worth more than that'.....

That's my two bobs worth on the subject.....

Hi Guys,

I've added a few new photos at

http://s767.photobucket.com/albums/xx320/ak0412/What%20is%20it%20Worth/

Not sure if it matters, the engine is a EA82

We are still not sure what price to put on the car...

and back in 1994, Tom Solund was going the use this car for demo purposes... and I think it is one of the last complete units to come out of the dandenong factory.

Also we remember that there was a mid mounted engine unit Tom was playing around with back then, we are not sure if this eureka is still around, does anyone know?

Thanks, Adrian

hey ak0412...
i would advetise the car at 25 like me an Streek said you can always come down in price but not up... it wouldn't bother me if it had an ea82 in it cause my ex reek had v w 1600 so i would see it as a huge step up the interior is so clean i was the looking over the photo's an thought you had problem with the canopy lift cause i noticed it was proped up with a pice of timber  i wouldn't  use that in an advertising stand point ...would i be correct you paid 12,000 back in 94 so looking for a profit is not such a bad thing the up keep of the car an respray is a huge benefit in this ... is that the same car the yellow an the blue cause i am awestruck of the makeover i would never believe that they are the same car.... :o :o :o :o :o

hey Streek ... if i had stable i would be the proud owners of twins thats if it was still  yellow one sports an one f4 sorry Adrian i am drooling over the car the colour the pinstriping the rims so they wouldn't be identicle but i can dream i miss my ex ole girl.... ;) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Hi Adrian,
Your reek is a high quality example. And you have a subi donk on an IRS rear end so that's a big positive. Paint, interior, everything looks good. Your absolute minimum should be no less than 18 G's. I'd realistically ask for 20 to 22.

This is another reek I'd happily put in my garage, once again like everybody else, if I had the money! Good luck with the sale.

The remains of the mid mount reek are under a cover at Ted's rural Sydney property. It was completely stripped when Ted and I found it. There's nothing left but the front half of the body tub, which has been seriously hacked up. It's only good for parts now.

Ok, having seen the additional photos, I'll up my original estimate to $18,000 minimum. I think if you were asking $25,000 for it you might scare away most potential buyers, but like Simon said, you might just get $22,000 for it. It's a very nice looking specimen.

One question, what's the hatch in the air intake for? What ever it's for, it looks neatly done.

As for mid mount 'reeks, I know of several that had/were in the process of being converted, including a prototype by Allan Purvis. But as far as I know of, none have been on the road or even completed. I also know of one Nova that's got a mid mounted engine, but that car also has a full custom space chassis.

The hatch in the air intake is for the radiator top-up, the highest point in the cooling system... good to bleed the system.  Dad was always worried about the engine overheating... but it never did.

My dad props up the roof with a stick because he leaves it open when it is parked in the garage, it might stay parked there for a couple of weeks or months without it going out, and he takes the battery out too... he starts the car a couple of times a month.

The picture with yellow car is not the same... but the car was originally yellow tho... it is just a sales brochure my dad had before he bought the car.

The $12K my dad paid back in 1994 was only the beginning... at the end he spent well in excess of $20K

your feedback has been great.

Regards, Adrian

Ah, I thought it may have been for the radiator.  ;)

I wonder it Allan has found a 'reek yet.   ;)

Adrian, i think your now just teasing us all! with the more pics that get added the more we all want it! (pretty sure i can talk for all when saying this) i dont think it will take long for you to sell it if your willing to negotiate your price. like a few have already stated id be highly considering starting at 22 or even 22.5 and then accept something of as low as 20 flat but anything much less of 20 flat would be selling yourself short i think.

good luck again with the sale

Do we (the disturbed enthusiasts) get first bid before it goes on to one of the car selling sites ????

I can't watch......I'm calling the bank...........I can hear them laughing now..........

like Vincent Price on the end of the Thriller album.....

We'll see....

Reek on all.......get em out and be proud

i think it would great if a forum /club member bought it at least it would stay amongst the group.. :)
at the end of the day you would just be showing a cool insanity for the passion of an excellent  car going by the picture's good luck i hope you get it.... ;)

Phil in my opinion we need more everywhere, not too many though, or at least the ones hiding away in the shed to be registered on the road :)

I agree Phil, let's get this one in SA, a little closer for me to purchase.......

Rego won't be an issue for us country dwellers..... Dodgy knows how to do it......

I'm watching this one.  and yes I do have a couple of every day cars I could sell.......

come on SA Forum watchers, count the pennies, I would love to see this one up close...

I'm assuming the owner wouldn't consider a straight swap ???????????????????  :)

Reek on everyone, we were out and about today getting photographed...... get em out and be proud.

Hi Guys,

My dad has seen all your comments... he is almost reluctant to sell...

I would almost take it off his hands too, but I already lack car space.

He is a german maintenence fitter by trade, thus he is a perfectionist, so he is going over the car himself before he sells

StReek... i'll ask him about a swap... he currently drives a VW Passat CC, so i'm not sure what car he would like.

I guess he would like to take it the a meet if there is one somewhere in Melbourne, so you guys can preview the car.

perfectionist would be a major understatement, my grandparents are german, my grandfather was a fitter and turner and also a tool maker, you have never seen anyone so fussy, i really hope your dad decides not to sell it for his sake, he WILL regret it

Yes, he should think very long and hard about selling it to give me more time to save up........  :)

PS StReek is grounded again, brake overhaul coming up..... over the cooler months....

Ready for a fantastic summer 2010.....

Reek on all.

G'day gang,

I had the privilege of going for a spin in this Reek on Sunday and the verdict is in....

This is truly one high class piece of machinery and workmanship, an absolute credit to Fred and Adrian and their desire for perfection.

It is absolutely schmick in every way and that BMW blue paint  is every bit as good as it looks in the photos too.

Totally sensational!

And then I had to drive home in DWEEBY.... (sigh)

Hey Guys,

After all this time, my dad has sold his Eureka.

Sorry to see it go.

We hope the new owner in QLD will enjoy his new ride.
