Post by: Agroeureka on Sunday, 20 September, 2009, 07:14:53 AM
Hi

Will post my project updates from now on in this thread as it is all coming together now slowly.
See attached pictures of my car out in the sun for the first time in 3 years with roof attached (thanks Simon AKA Metalsmith)
And yes if you wont to live in Stanhope Gardens two homes are for rent in back ground of both pics.

Hi

It’s been a while but the attached picture is of brake and clutch master cylinders being mounted.
New high speed shopping centre front end fitted (kidding) ::)
I have now taken the body back off to allow access to  front end for fitment of front end ,braces, master cylinders  and wielding of frame as it is only tacked at present.
The steering rack /box has become more involved than I had hoped at present I have an EMPI rack , a Vw box and a Hyundai excel rack on the way. I have found space to be a problem needing to have wiring, air ducts, steering components, and master cylinders and throttle linkages all in one spot has confined space. I have decided to look at all three set ups and use the best compromise.

Hi

If its not to hot this week end should have a big update. That is some hours >30 degrees
Also full time employment would help my speed of my project.

Have found my front beam was bent will be getting a replacment on saturday. This will allow me to fit the beam and fabricate my beam braces and finalise the location of my master cylinders.
My fuel tank is reinstalled to check pipe runs. The clutch slave cylinder location and operation , final welding , a number of holes for services (power, brake lines, fuel lines, air ducts ect ) and seat belt mounts the chassis can go to powder coating.
Then i can start body work?????????????? 2-3 months.
Paint 1 month
Fit out 1 month
Rego 1 month
Contingency 5 months

So may be ready for next years meet.

Hi

Just a small up date i was unable to pick up my new front beam on the weekend (Wife said i must fix the ducted ac)
The attached picture is of the test assembley of the front end to check wheel clearances to the master cylinders.
I have also test fitted the beam braces to and will have to remake to fit the lowered pan.The mountung points at the pan end will not clear the pan lowering braces.
If anyone is thinking of fitting beam braces thay will interfere with the front under sill.

Andrew

PS Sorry about the picture quality my phone has been found not to like dust and water (work) and i have to use an old one.And i can not up load it.27/11/2009 it worked

Hi

Just came in from the Eureka Operating theatre and have found i have ticked off the last item on my construction list so ihave finished the welding and grinding so next stop powder coating.

The picture below is of back half of the frame showing the side braces to stop the flexing of the back half of the car.

I will be taking better pictures when i get it out of the theatre and on to the trailer.

Should post those on Thursday.

what are billet part's.

Title: Re: Andrew's Project (Agroeureka)
Post by: CyCo on Thursday, 11 February, 2010, 03:56:28 PM
what are billet part's.

Basically custom parts made from a section of material (often aluminium, but could be steel, magnesium, or titanium [typically a light metal]) called a billet. A billet is just the terminology used to describe a block of said metal. It's usually either a round bar or rectangular block, but could be any shape really. It depends on what's going to be made from it, that usually determins the shape of the billet sourced.

It should be noted that it's not very often made from 100% aluminium, or what ever, it's usually an alloy.

Then the billet is machined to the required shape and specifications.

The benefits of making something this way is that you know it's going to be a better quality part, and therefore stronger, than something cast in the same shape.

All the shiny parts you see (including the light surrounds, rear bumper, let alone in the engine bay, are made from 'billet'.

Well said Cyc -baby.
I'll expand a bit on your info though.

Quote
It should be noted that it's not very often made from 100% aluminium, or what ever, it's usually an alloy.

Nearly all aluminium is alloyed with another metal. 4000, 5000  and 6000 series alum are the most common types. The 10,000 series is pure. Billet alloys are usually 5000 or 6000 series, the higher 6K (6400 and above) being aircraft quality.

Quote
All the shiny parts you see (including the light surrounds, rear bumper, let alone in the engine bay, are made from 'billet'

The rear bumper is an alloy extrusion, not billet. It's been carefully sanded to give it that "billet" look, which is also a popular trick.

This guys car is mind blowing, though. He's definately got too much time on his hands!

You're probably right about the bumper Simon, though I wouldn't be surprised. The guy who owns the Billet Bug is retired, and turns/mills all his own stuff in his shed (what a shed that must be!!  :o ), so he has plenty of time. It's actually known as the Billet Bug from memory, and has a ton of trophies. And that's an older photo, in an article in Unique Cars, her talks about the Billet Bug, and had more resent photos.

agro my gear shifter looks to be in the same position as yours... not sure if you have to bend them when they are in that position. have you dummy fitted the handbrake to see how much clearance there is between the 2? you may be able to just buy another shifter from a volksy wreckers or an aftermarket one if there isnt enough clearance.

looks micky mate, just dont like the fact that you put the seat in there, makes me want the originals just that much more lol, but seriously mate, this thing looks GOOD!

Hi
The shifter is not a vw its a Porsche with custom base and links.
The hand brake is also to be custom see pictures

I actually i have bigger problems at present my rear brake's and front suspension do not fit in my rims :'( :'(
So having to re-plan the project to install my large brakes up front and rim conversion to holden commodore stud pattern.
And i still have to have it registered for the end of year weekend.
I made the fatal mistake of trusting free advice and did not check as i would usually o well.
Back to the lathe

Check the picks
First is the front lower ball joint rubbing the rim
Second is the brake clearance to the rear rim and ripping off the ballance weights

Andrew

I'll have a Bourbon thanks bar keep!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but it still looks like it's going to be ahead turner.. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Hi

Have not set the spring/ride heights yet as there is some more parts to come from Mr Metalsmith to alow ajustment

Andrew

The height at present is 100mm to base of pan as per rego law call me Mr plow but seriously the front end is just ajusted to allow the ball joints to clear the rims and the front/rear will have coil overs/bags. I will be setting the suspension up to handle, I have friends at Eastern Creek Raceway so a few track days will be required.

Title: Re: Andrew's Project (Agroeureka)
Post by: tmerivale on Tuesday, 06 April, 2010, 10:30:35 AM
one option for you could be to put bigger rims on your masterpiece. depending on what size you have already 1 or 2 inches bigger may see enough room to fix your problem if they are 14's and you went to 15's this would give you approximately an extra 13mm of room. might be a pain to have to buy another set of rims but you could always sell the ones you have for a new pair of the same type in the next size up. im guessing your looking at going the old school style but if im wrong then there are plenty of BIG rims you could get.

its just my thoughts as there would be far less work needed. anyway good luck with your problem. keep us posted champ

Hey Andrew,
I'd've thought you'd be going for a set of filthy 18's at least. I thought my wheels might be in for a bit of competition. I guess not!

Hi

18"s are i think a bit big (too smaller side wall) also you are limited in tyre choice.
I can get 17"tyres at the right price.

Bru-hah ha ha ha ha ha !!!
Oh mercy! (chuckle snort) no really, good luck there mate. The story of my wheels is long and frustrating and ends up leading me to buy my wheels from the US, as you know. ROH, Speedy, BBS and the now defunct Simmons (good riddance!) all won't want to know you.

Dragway in Vic will be interested but will ask for both your left and right testicles regarding payment. I was quoted at the time around 1.8 to 2.3 G's per wheel, without anodising to my custom offset. You only have a small choice of designs also.

The US place I bought my wheels from CNC machined them to my own design and offset after stringent computer analysis, anodised the centres, assembled them, computer balanced them and shipped them here for far less than I could've had them made in Oz.

Things might've changed in the 4 or so years since I did this, but don't count on it. Call me tomorrow when I'm at work. I have one more bloke to recommend to you, but he won't be cheap either.

Title: Re: Andrew's Project (Agroeureka)
Post by: The Metalsmith on Thursday, 08 April, 2010, 09:57:35 PM
Dave,
Speedy, like ROH and 99% of every other Oz wheel manufacturer, cast single or 2 piece wheels with a very limited range of offsets, obviously aimed at the volume markets of popular cars eg. Commodore, Falcon, Camry etc. They're not interested in making a new mould to cast a custom offset.

To make a wheel with a custom offset as Andrew needs he'll require a single or a 3 piece wheel either of which is a full machined wheel. Companies that do this in Oz are rare and expensive, like Dragway. If you wanted a standard offset it's open slather. You'd have plenty of choice.

But that's the easy way. And nothing on my reek has been done the easy way.

Hi

Thanks for the reply's
Simon's right, off the shelf is cheaper but will not give me the look i am after i have put in too much work to short cut the last part.
I will be at present buying a set of commodore rims and tires off Ebay to keep it on wheels and so i can get to "the weekend".I have found that the sooner you are talking to easy the process becomes with ordering any custom parts or design.
Simon you have told me the story of your wheels and i was hoping the seen in  Australia had improved.
As for off the shelf rims yes there some good looking ones out there most are not DOT approved and I have seen some of the lighter units tare out the centers with high HP/G load applications. (I should stop spending time at race tracks)

Andrew

Ps Simon will you be going to time attack ? Let me know.

Hi

Tire size is at present up to fleabay some thing to push the car around maybe a lap around the block.
The final size will be up to the engineer I would like somthing like
Front 17" *265*45/50
Back  17" * 335*45/50
Still have to check what will fit, when body is bolted back on and then consault the engineer and of corse the cost.
Old tires were 15*245*65 front i think and 15*265*65 rear would have to check.A lot like cycos 15-20 years old.

Those would certainly be nice and wide, just over 13". My current rears are 10".

Mind you, he'll probably have better chances of getting rubber that size on 17" rims than my 265 on 14"s.

Hi
Have now calmed down and I got my refunds from everyone (And a few Tshirts).
Rear disk brakes (Ford) Installed see pictures
Front rotors (Ford) Got them working on
Front brake calipers Now changed to Ford will look over Monday
Pedal Box (Investigating)
Brake lines, see above
Rear coil overs DONE
Steering box's plus linkages (Andrew) Cleaned will install tommorow (Monday)
Fuel lines ,Monday
Battery Cables as above
Hydraulic Clutch , (Investigating)

Have now gone with Ford stud patten all round and brakes I will be designing the fronts Monday.
The rears are EL Falcon I have installed them and have still to design the hand brake (Should not be to hard)
The fronts are BA Falcon big and cheap used by ford to pull up a 1.8 ton car so the Eureks should be no problem I will be constructing the mounts for the calipers Monday the rotors will be mounted on a machined hub (Have all ready done a mock up)with Ford stud patten.
The wheels now fitted are BA steel rims 16" by ??  to allow me to move the car may be good enough to use for rego will have to talk to Blue slip man.

Looking good Andrew. About the red dodad on the steering box. I've read a few things over the last few years about how that's the last thing you want there. From what I understand is that the material (Nyroprene?) isn't designed for those sorts of forces seen during steering and it sheers apart. One story the unit was less than 6 months old.

Hi
Yes thanks for the heads up
I did some R/D before purchase and found most of the storys come from installations that allow the unit to deflect or move in multiple directions if these loads are removed  and the unit only is transmits steering loads the units last fo a number  of years.(I bought 2 just incase)

Andrew,
I have thought about doing the "twin steering box" trick on my reek here in the UK.  Did you use a LHD steering box? Will the damper fit in the same position?  Are you using a std damper?

Hi

Steering box was my orignal with a left hand arm fitted.
Damper will not fit in same position is now to be mounted on the other side of the center arm.
Yes standed damper custon mount off the chassis not the beam.
I will look through my pictures on the week end and post one showing the completed setup.

Hi

Dont use that red thing on your steering. That will break without notice in about 3 weeks. The vw forum also say they are bad. You are best to use original rubber type. just a heads up, looks great.
